Dan Smyers Reveals 'Unfortunate Reality Of Animal Rescue' With New Adoptee

Animal rescue isn't an easy space to navigate and Dan Smyers of Dan + Shay knows that all too well.

On Tuesday (March 2), the country hitmaker took to Instagram to share glimpses of his new 16-year-old chihuahua, Buddy, admitting that the recently adopted canine doesn't have much time left. "It doesn’t come as a total surprise, given her age and physical condition, but our hearts still ache, as we’ve grown attached over the past few days," the singer wrote in a lengthy message. "She was dealt a tough hand in her previous life, but we’re going to make up for lost love the rest of the time she has left. We’re unsure of whether she had a family before, but we’re happy to say that she does now as we’ve decided to officially adopt her as our 5th dog."

He went on to thank everyone who checked in on Buddy and has been following the journey. "We're still navigating the whole situation in real time, but we promise she is in the best hands, and living life to the absolute fullest. sunshine, tasty food, cozy time in her blanket (nest) by the fire, and feeling the most love a pup could ever hope to feel," he continued. "@abbysmyers and i will be sharing more of her journey over the next few days. this is the unfortunate reality of animal rescue, but she’s opened our hearts in a way we never even knew was possible.”

Smyers previously admitted that he and wife Abby took in Buddy after spotting her at Wags & Walks Rescue in Nashville. They had initially intended to bring her into their home temporarily as she recovered on the health front. The pair already owns four dogs.
